COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER COLLEGE OF DENTAL MEDICINE

Center for Precision Dentistry and Simulation Learning

Location: New York, NY
Size: 120,000 square feet
Project: Master Plan and Renovation

This project began with a Master Planning exercise for the College of Dental Medicine that resulted in the decision to remain in the existing site which is in a building over 100 years old and to renovate and modernize it to accommodate a new curriculum and operatory environment for the 21st Century.

The new operatory environment supports preclinical simulation learning and patient care. Incorporating streaming video and simulation helps students to maximize performance before they interact with patients. Preclinical students will work alongside clinical students and postgraduates and train in the same environment where they will practice. Integrating dental and medical records with unprecedented data streams from this state-of-the-art clinic enables faculty to harness the promise of genomics, bioinformatics and personalized medicine to push the boundaries of dental research.

This more efficient clinical space enhances understanding of patient needs, provides tools for the most informed decision-making, reduces costs and improves outcomes for patients. Data driven performance metrics for each student and procedure enhance teaching opportunities and the ability of students to review, document and record work and progress throughout the semester.
