Greenwich House was founded in 1902, modeled on the settlement houses in England. It was run by progressive women assisting the Irish and Italian immigrant population in attaining improved housing, receiving social and educational services, and enjoying cultural events. In 1917, the facility opened at Barrow Street, combining several educational and cultural programs. Recently Greenwich House partnered with the NYC Economic Development Corporation to consolidate these programs in the six story historic building.

Greenwich House retained Jeffrey Berman Architects (JBA) prepare a reorganization plan of four floors of the six story, the 24,000 SF Charles Nichols Center. This building houses Barrow Street Nursery School, the Children’s Safety Project, the Senior Health and Consultation Program, and the Judith C. White Senior Center for meals and social events. JBA completed the planning, and reorganization of the functional program to improve the flow and functionality of the building. JBA anticipates that design and construction will be complete by June 2012.
