Jeffrey Berman Architect was asked to study the existing ORs and adjacent support space and make recommendations for options to expand one of the ORs to support the new DaVinci 4-arm X I Robot and its two consoles for a cardiac surgery team. The challenge was to efficiently plan the set-up of all of the equipment and booms to fit these procedures in a room of limited size. Candidate ORs were surveyed to determine the best site based on the availability of adjacent space that could be integrated into the OR to supply the required square footage and additional width for the robots, consoles, perfusionist and general OR staff to work safely and comfortably.

The goal was to use an existing room and to update the equipment and integration to match the new NYP standards along with the redesign and expansion.

Planning, programming and design were all done in 2-D, 3-D and Virtual Reality presentations to insure that each piece of equipment was properly located. This eliminated the need for full physical mock-ups and saved both time and money.

In a related project an integrated dry teaching lab to support DaVinci training as part of the Medical School program was designed and built.
