THE AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY
Ornithology Department - Cullman Molecular Laboratory
Location: New York, NY
Size: 10,000 square feet
Project Type: Programming, Planning, Laboratory Renovation
Jeffrey Berman Architect designed a new molecular systematics laboratory - the first major upgrade to the Ornithology Department’s landmark building since its original construction more than seventy years before. As part of a complete renovation and restack of the building, collections were compacted to create program space for labs, offices and exhibition halls and to provide infrastructure to support a humidity-controlled collections space. Upgrades of building HVAC systems, emergency power and laboratory plumbing and waste treatment systems were part of the scope of work.
The Cullman Molecular Lab offers state-of-the-art facilities for molecular systematics, DNA sequencing, wet chemistry, bird physiology and gross anatomy. Covering a full floor consisting of 10,000 square feet, the laboratory incorporates wet labs, collection storage, teaching space, conference rooms and offices.
