NEW YORK-PRESBYTERIAN LOWER MANHATTAN CANCER CENTER
Location: New York, NY
Size: 16,500 square feet
Project Type: Health Systems Planning and Interior Design
An important part of JBA’s brief was helping NYPH Lower Manhattan Radiation Oncology, a private physician’s single specialty practice, to find space that would accommodate their program in ground floor retail tenant space in an office building in Lower Manhattan. The next step was to present the program and infrastructure requirements to building management and finally to design The Center to achieve minimal impact on the existing building and its other tenants. JBA and The Center located the perfect space only after testing the program and negotiating leases at a number of other sites.
NYPH Lower Manhattan Radiation Oncology features two high-energy Elekta linear accelerators and an HDR + Brachytherapy Suite that required shielded vaults weighing 2 million pounds each. Their mass required that they be built on their own independent foundations and capped in additional space rented on the floor above.
The spa-like treatment center, including spacious dressing rooms, flora aquariums and luxurious furniture and finishes, is warm, welcoming and, in sharp contrast to a typical hospital or private practice environment, luxurious. The Center focuses its attention on the whole person, not just the illness.
JBA assembled and coordinated the work of a large and complex project team to work with the owner and a number of city agencies to complete the project.
